VPN server in Sweden: the Stockholm exit for the Nordics and the Baltic

WrapVPN's exit server in Sweden is in Stockholm, on the country's Baltic coast. Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga and Oslo all lie within 450 km of the city, nearer than Kiruna in Sweden's own far north, which makes Stockholm the exit to compare first from most of the Nordic and Baltic countries.

This page lists the distances and latency floors from Stockholm and identifies the places where Frankfurt or London is nearer. It also describes what changes when websites see a Swedish address, the ferry and rail networks a traveller there is likely to use, and what the Stockholm exit server can and cannot see.

Stockholm's distances to the Nordic and Baltic countries

Every latency figure on this page is a floor: the great-circle distance in kilometres divided by 100. The rule follows from the speed of light in glass fibre, about 200 km per millisecond, over a journey that has to go out and come back, so no route can achieve a shorter round trip.

Many of the links between these countries are submarine cables under the Baltic, and cables on land run beside railways and roads. Measured latency is therefore always higher than the floor, by an amount that depends on the route your provider uses.

Seen from Stockholm, the capitals across the water are closer than much of Sweden. Kiruna, above the Arctic Circle, is 950 km away, more than twice the distance to Tallinn.

  • Across the Baltic: Tallinn 380 km, Helsinki 400 km and Riga 440 km, each a floor of about 4 ms.
  • To the west and south-west: Oslo 420 km and Copenhagen 520 km, floors of about 4 and 5 ms.
  • Within Sweden: Gothenburg 400 km and Malmö 510 km, floors of about 4 and 5 ms, and Kiruna 950 km, a floor of about 9.5 ms.

Where Frankfurt or London is the nearer exit

Stockholm's advantage narrows to the south and west. Frankfurt, 1,200 km from Stockholm, and London, 1,450 km away, are the exits to compare from Poland, from the southern end of Scandinavia and from Iceland.

For North America, Stockholm is the longest of the three European routes compared here. Cedar Knolls, in the New York area, is 6,350 km from Stockholm, against 6,200 km from Frankfurt and 5,600 km from London, a difference of about 7 ms in the floor between Stockholm and London.

  • Warsaw: 810 km to Stockholm and 890 km to Frankfurt, floors less than 1 ms apart. Your provider's routing decides, so compare both on your own connection.
  • Reykjavik: 1,900 km to London and 2,150 km to Stockholm, floors of about 19 and 21 ms. For Iceland, London is the nearer exit.
  • Helsinki: 400 km to Stockholm and 1,500 km to Frankfurt, floors of about 4 and 15 ms. For Finland, Stockholm is the clear choice on distance.
  • Copenhagen and Malmö: 520 and 510 km from Stockholm, at the southern end of Scandinavia. Compare Stockholm with Frankfurt from there before settling on one.

Note

A floor shows what distance alone costs. Where two exits have floors within a few milliseconds of each other, as Stockholm and Frankfurt do from Warsaw, your provider's routing decides, and only a measurement on your own connection settles it.

What a Swedish IP address is useful for

Stockholm serves two different purposes: a short route for the Nordic and Baltic countries, and an address in Sweden for anyone who needs one.

  • A nearby exit for Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Norway: from Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga or Oslo, the round trip to Stockholm has a floor of about 4 ms, little enough to keep the tunnel on throughout the day.
  • Swedish accounts used while travelling: some services compare the country a sign-in comes from with the country they expect, and the Stockholm exit gives them a Swedish one. Every user of the exit shares its address, which some services also take into account.
  • One address on a Baltic crossing: a ferry crossing from Stockholm can move a phone between the ship's Wi-Fi and more than one national mobile network. With the tunnel up, the address that websites see stays Swedish from one port to the other.

How websites respond to a Swedish address

Many websites read a country from your IP address and adjust to it. Through Stockholm, that means Swedish-language pages, prices in kronor, and search results, maps and weather centred on Sweden. Some Swedish sites also publish an English version, reached through a language control on the page.

Swedish formatting tends to come with it. Sites that take their locale from the address write dates year first, in the form 2026-10-29, and use a comma as the decimal separator.

The effect reaches beyond Sweden. From Helsinki, Tallinn or Riga, where prices are in euros, and from Oslo, where they are in Norwegian kroner, many websites switch to Swedish pages and kronor while you are connected through Stockholm. A service that works out your time zone from the address rather than from your device will also show Swedish time, one hour behind Finland, Estonia and Latvia.

Large downloads tend to come from near the exit. A content delivery network sees the Stockholm exit's address when you request a file, and the DNS resolver that looked up the name was reached from that same address, so operating-system updates, software packages and video tend to arrive from a copy in Sweden or close to it.

Ferries and trains around the Baltic

Much travel around the Baltic goes by sea or rail. Ferries, many of them overnight, link Stockholm with Finland and with other ports around the Baltic, and rail lines connect Stockholm with Gothenburg, Malmö, Copenhagen and Oslo. Where ferries and trains offer Wi-Fi, it is a network shared with every other passenger.

A ship at sea has no fixed line to land. Its Wi-Fi reaches the shore by radio, over a satellite link or a mobile network within range of the coast, so its capacity is limited and divided among everyone on board. A phone on its own mobile data can move from one national network to another during a crossing, and coverage can disappear for stretches of open sea.

Complete the ship's or the train's sign-in page before connecting, then leave the tunnel on for the journey.

The page on train Wi-Fi, linked below, covers how onboard networks are carried, why they drop in cuttings and tunnels, and how WrapVPN's tunnel behaves through the gaps. On land, station, library and café networks need the same order: complete the sign-in page, then connect.

What the Stockholm exit server can and cannot see

Three parties see part of a connection through Stockholm. The network you are on, whether a ship, a train or a café, sees an encrypted WireGuard session between your device and Stockholm, with its timing and the amount of data it carries, and none of the sites or lookups inside it.

The Stockholm exit server decrypts the tunnel and forwards your traffic, so it sees the addresses you connect to. HTTPS, which most sites and apps now use, keeps the content of a connection unreadable there, but traffic sent without encryption is readable at that point.

Websites and apps see the exit's IPv4 address, shared by every user of the Stockholm exit, rather than the address of the network you are on. Some sites meet an address that many people share with extra checks, such as a CAPTCHA.

Two of WrapVPN's records concern the exit directly, and a DNS filter runs on it; the privacy policy describes the others.

  • A record of each connection and disconnection, holding your account, the time, the exit server and how long the session lasted.
  • An hourly summary that each exit server sends for each tunnel address, holding the volume of data, the external addresses reached over TCP and the domain names associated with them. The summary can be linked to your account.
  • Clean Web, a DNS filter on a resolver that runs on the exit server. A name on its blocklist receives the answer that the domain does not exist, so apps that use the tunnel's resolver do not attempt the connection; a browser or app with its own encrypted DNS bypasses it. Android starts with it on; iPhone, iPad and Mac start with it off; on Windows, the switch in Settings shows its state.
  • With Clean Web off, lookups still travel through the tunnel, to Cloudflare's resolver on Android and Windows and to Google's on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Those resolvers see the Stockholm exit's address, not yours.

Common uses

Living in Helsinki, Tallinn or Riga

From the three capitals across the Baltic, Stockholm is 380 to 440 km away, close enough to leave the tunnel on all day. The trade-off is localisation: many sites present Swedish pages and kronor until you choose another language on the site, and a site that reads your time zone from the address shows Swedish time, an hour behind your own. For a service that must see an address in your own country, Stockholm is the wrong exit; for the rest, the short route is what counts.

An overnight ferry from Stockholm

A free session lasts one hour from the moment it starts, which covers part of an evening on board rather than the crossing. The weekly plan at $1.99 covers seven days, enough for a round trip and the days around it, and it renews until you cancel it in your App Store or Google Play subscription settings. Complete the ship's sign-in page before connecting, and on Android answer 'Keep connected' if the app asks during a long gap.

Northern Sweden

Kiruna is 950 km from Stockholm, a floor of about 9.5 ms: further than Tallinn or Helsinki, but still a short route for browsing and calls. Measured latency from the north sits above that floor, and on iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows the server list shows by how much on your own connection.

How to set up WrapVPN

  1. 1

    Install WrapVPN and sign in

WrapVPN is available from the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Mac, from Google Play for Android, and from the Microsoft Store for Windows. Sign-in is with Apple or Google only. Choose one and keep to it on every device: a plan belongs to the account it was bought on, and an Apple sign-in with Hide My Email does not reach the same account as a Google sign-in.

  2. 2

Choose Stockholm in the server list

The Stockholm entry carries the Swedish flag, and on Android and Windows the SE country code as well. Android lists it as 'SE - Stockholm' under 'Choose Exit Destination', opened from the 'SERVER LOCATION' card. iPhone and iPad show it in 'Pick a Server', opened with 'Change'. The Mac lists it in the 'Locations' column, and Windows in its 'Locations' panel, where the row shows the city with the country code. Selecting it connects, except on Windows, where you select it and then 'Connect'. iPhone and iPad move the selection to the fastest-measured location when the app opens while disconnected, and Windows goes back to its automatic choice each time it starts, so confirm Stockholm is still selected before connecting.

  3. 3

Compare Stockholm with its neighbours on one device

On iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows, each location in the list carries a latency figure that the app measures from your device; WrapVPN's servers report none. Compare Stockholm with Frankfurt or London on the same device, because each app times the route its own way. After changing networks on Windows, use the refresh button to measure again; during a free session on iPhone or iPad, disconnect before moving to another location.

Common questions

Where is WrapVPN's exit server in Sweden?

In Stockholm. Traffic sent through the Swedish server location leaves the tunnel there and reaches websites from an address in Sweden. In the server list, the entry carries the Swedish flag, with the SE code on Android and Windows. The city names in the list come from the location data recorded for each server's address.

Is Stockholm the right exit for Finland, Estonia and Latvia?

For a short route, usually yes. Helsinki is 400 km from Stockholm, Tallinn 380 km and Riga 440 km, each a floor of about 4 ms, whereas Helsinki to Frankfurt is 1,500 km. The cost is that many websites treat you as being in Sweden, with Swedish pages and prices in kronor.

Should I use Stockholm or Frankfurt in Poland?

Measure both. Warsaw is 810 km from Stockholm and 890 km from Frankfurt, so the floors differ by less than 1 ms and your provider's routing decides which is faster. On iPhone, iPad, Android or Windows, compare the two figures in the server list on one device and one network.

Which exit is nearer for Iceland?

London, on distance. Reykjavik is 1,900 km from London and 2,150 km from Stockholm, floors of about 19 and 21 ms. The gap is small enough that routing can reverse it, so measure both on your own connection.

Why do websites show Swedish and kronor while I am connected?

Many websites read the country from your IP address, and through Stockholm that address is Swedish. A language selector on the site usually overrides it. A service that sets its clock from your address will also show Swedish time.

What does the Stockholm exit server know about my traffic?

Your traffic is encrypted until it reaches the Stockholm exit, which forwards it and therefore knows where it goes. Content protected by HTTPS stays unreadable there, while unencrypted traffic can be read. WrapVPN records each connection and disconnection, and each exit server sends an hourly summary per tunnel address of the data moved, the external addresses reached over TCP and the related domain names, which can be linked to your account. For the rest, see the privacy policy.

Is Stockholm included in the free plan?

Yes. Every plan reaches every server location. The free plan gives each account three one-hour sessions a week, shared by all of its devices with no device limit, and the count resets every Monday at 00:00 UTC. Each hour runs from the moment the session starts, and reconnecting within it, to any server location, does not use another session. The weekly plan at $1.99 and the monthly plan at $3.99 have no session limit and renew until you cancel them in your store's subscription settings.
